Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze if religious diversity is working in Brazilian education to train citizens who live respectfully in society. For such purpose, a qualitative research was used with a historical method, based on the bibliographic analysis of educational laws, books and magazines. After reflecting on the history of religious instruction in Brazil, it was revealed that, with Act 9475 of 1997, this curricular component became part of the official school curricula for basic education in Brazil, and that from that period no efforts have been spared in teaching the cultural and religious diversity of the country, with the purpose of contributing to the knowledge and respect for the different religious and cultural expressions found in Brazilian society, and of educating multicultural citizens.
