Abstract
Teacher education should consider the distinction between rural and urban areas. The concept of rural is revised in order to review the history of rural education in Colombia. Rural education is analyzed taking into account biodiversity and ethnic plurality. It is described in some Latin American countries, and, finally, it is suggested that two different dialectical perspectives should be considered regarding teacher education for rural areas in Colombia: one, the context in which teachers in rural areas carry out their jobs, and two, the educational model offered by the institutions that train teachers for rural areas.
