Systematic Review of Protective and Risk Factors Influencing Student Retention in the Latin American Context

Abstract

Objective: to systematically analyze the scientific literature to determine the risk and protective factors that influence in the student permanence according to the Latin American context. Materials and methods: Systematic literature review based on PRISMA guidelines. A literature crawl was conducted in Redalyc, Scielo, Dialnet, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Gale A Cengage Company, between 2014 to 2022. Results: 53 research studies were selected, most of which were developed in Colombia and mention individual, institutional, socioeconomic, academic and family factors as influential at a protective or risk level on permanence. Conclusions: The factors mentioned above are interrelated and, depending on the interaction an it’s modulation, they can be transformed as protective or risk factors
