Teacher Perceptions Regarding the Intercultural Communicative Competence of the Bachelor’s Program in Foreign Languages in a Colombian Public University

Abstract

This article presents an exploratory study regarding beliefs and perceptions about the concept of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and its practice in teachers of the Foreign Language Teaching Program at Universidad del Valle. This exploratory mixed type of case study seeks to identify teacher’s beliefs and perception about ICC to establish a clear horizon that allows to develop intervention proposals which imply adjustments on the designs of program’s syllabuses, in the short and medium term. The findings indicate that the teachers in this program perceive language and culture as inseparable, but their pedagogical practices are not coherent with this perception. Teachers recognize the need to strengthen their theoretical and methodological knowledge about ICC, which will then help them transform their pedagogical practices and make modifications to the educational project of the program.
