Salesian Contribution to the Catholic Education Project in Colombia (1886-1935)

Abstract

This paper offers a historical perspective on the educational model and the political proposal of the Regeneration in Colombia in 1886-1935. This educational offering is based on the Catholic vision, which calls for an education that raises “good Christians and citizens”. Therefore, regenerators hand education to the Catholic Church, which is in charge of the education of the elite, the emerging middle class and the working class. Here is where the role of Salesians becomes fundamental as, through the preventive educational approach, they will not educate with repression and punishment, but by respecting the personality, will and freedom of the learner.
